Detection of self-incompatible oilseed rape plants (Brassica napus L.) based on molecular markers for identification of the class I S haplotype Genet. Mol. Biol.
Havlícková,Lenka; Jozová,Eva; Klíma,Miroslav; Kucera,Vratislav; Curn,Vladislav.
The selection of desirable genotypes with recessive characteristics, such as self-incompatible plants, is often difficult or even impossible and represents a crucial barrier in accelerating the breeding process. Molecular approaches and selection based on molecular markers can allow breeders to overcome this limitation. The use of self-incompatibility is an alternative in hybrid breeding of oilseed rape. Unfortunately, stable self-incompatibility is recessive and phenotype-based selection is very difficult and time-consuming. The development of reliable molecular markers for detecting desirable plants with functional self-incompatible genes is of great importance for breeders and allows selection at early stages of plant growth. Because most of these...

Evaluation of a SCAR RYSC3 Marker of the Ry adg Gene to Select Resistant Genotypes to Potato Virus Y (PVY) in the INIA Potato Breeding Program Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Sagredo D,Boris; Mathias R,Mónica; Barrientos P,Claudia; Acuña B,Ivette; Kalazich B,Julio; Santos Rojas,José.
The Potato virus Y (PVY) is distributed worldwide and is one of the most damaging viruses in terms of yield reduction in the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) crop with losses sometimes reaching 80%. To reduce its impact, there is great interest in obtaining varieties carrying the Ry adg gene that provides extreme resistance to this virus. This could be facilitated with SCAR (sequence characterized amplified region) RYSC3 by molecular marker-assisted selection (MAS). This study compared the effectiveness of the RYSC3 marker in the detection of the Ry adg gene vs. biological tests on populations of the Potato Breeding Program of the Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA), Chile. Within the group of 71 progenitors, 30 plants had some kind of...

Genetic engineering applications in animal breeding Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Montaldo,Hugo H..
This paper discusses the use of genetic engineering applications in animal breeding, including a description of the methods, their potential and current uses and ethical issues. Genetic engineering is the name of a group of techniques used to identify, replicate, modify and transfer the genetic material of cells, tissues or complete organisms. Important applications of genetic engineering in animal breeding are: 1) Marker-assisted selection (MAS). The objective of this technology is to increase disease resistance, productivity and product quality in economically important animals by adding information of DNA markers to phenotypes and genealogies for selection decisions. 2) Transgenesis, the direct transfer of specific genes/alleles between individuals,...

Genome selection in fruit breeding: application to table grapes Scientia Agricola
Viana,Alexandre Pio; Resende,Marcos Deon Vilela de; Riaz,Summaira; Walker,Michael Andrew.
ABSTRACT Genomic selection (GS) has recently been proposed as a new selection strategy which represents an innovative paradigm in crop improvement, now widely adopted in animal breeding. Genomic selection relies on phenotyping and high-density genotyping of a sufficiently large and representative sample of the target breeding population, so that the majority of loci that regulate a quantitative trait are in linkage disequilibrium with one or more molecular markers and can thus be captured by selection. In this study we address genomic selection in a practical fruit breeding context applying it to a breeding population of table grape obtained from a cross between the hybrid genotype D8909-15 (Vitis rupestris × Vitis arizonica/girdiana), which is resistant...

The sampling bias in multi-agent simulation models AgEcon
Buysse, Jeroen; Frija, Aymen; Van der Straeten, Bart; Nolte, Stephan; Lauwers, Ludwig H.; Claeys, Dakerlia; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido.
For practical considerations, it is in some case impossible to simulate MAS models at population level. The current paper shows that MAS models applied to samples with heterogeneous costs of interactions between agents have biased results. Heterogeneous costs of interactions in MAS models can come from the spatial dimension in MAS models or from fixed costs per interaction. The paper presents two correction procedures to remove the sampling bias and to increase the reliability of the outcome. The correction procedures can be very promising for future applications of MAS models because it becomes possible to deploy more complex models without bias on more detailed datasets that are only available at sample level, which will be the case for country- or...

Validation of microsatellite markers for assisted selection of soybean resistance to cyst nematode races 3 and 14 PAB
Silva,Marcia Flores da; Schuster,Ivan; Silva,João Flávio Veloso da; Ferreira,Adésio; Barros,Everaldo Gonçalves de; Moreira,Maurilio Alves.
The objective of this work was to validate microsatellite markers associated with resistance to soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines Ichinohe) races 3 and 14, in soybean (Glycine max L.) genotypes, for use in marker-assisted selection (MAS) programs. Microsatellites of soybean linkage groups A2, D2 and G were tested in two populations, and their selection efficiencies were determined. The populations were 65 F2:3 families from Msoy8001 (resistant) x Conquista (susceptible) cross, and 66 F2:3 families of S5995 (resistant) x Renascença (susceptible) cross, evaluated for resistance to races 3 and 14, respectively. Families with female index up to 30% were considered moderately resistant. Markers of A2 and G linkage groups were associated with resistance...
